Greetings to you and welcome to our Autumn 2012 edition of THE SOUTH SHORE MAGAZINE. It’s hard to believe that the pages of the calendar have already flipped through to September. Our relaxed summer schedules are now just a memory. We have returned to normal work schedules; the kids are back in school or in my case back to college. True signs of the season’s change are school buses making their rounds, sailing clubs putting their boats away until next year, local garden stores displaying rows of mums, kale and other late harvest offerings. The local farmers’ markets are abundant with squashes, gourds and root veggies. Corn stalks are not far behind! Like me I am sure many of you planted far too many tomatoes and are looking for alternatives to Caprese salad!

We have been hard at work the last couple of months building a balanced and informative new issue of The South Shore Magazine. As you have seen, our front cover and feature article highlight Hingham Institution for Savings. As you might imagine, the South Shore was a far more rural landscape at the turn of the century and through the end of WWII. Part of the local culture, especially with men of all ages, was hunting and fishing, with thousands of acres of land across the South Shore open to these sports. A very important and necessary tool in the arsenal of bird hunting is the decoy. I have personally been fascinated by the artistic detail and reality of these decoys and recall many different varieties adorning the walls or shelves of barns and sheds around the South Shore and at family “camps” on the Cape. In recent years, I have come to know and learn much more about these handcrafted art forms and attribute much of my “learning” to a good friend Pete Clarke, an avid hunter and fisherman and collector of “sporting art.” My home town of Hingham was and still remains one of the hotbeds for decoy craftsmen. Check out our article on this art form, which thankfully is very much alive and well today.

Perseverance, determination and hard work are the attributes that are going to get help regain our country’s stability. I would also like to emphatically state that: I DID BUILD THIS BUSINESS as did all of the businesses profiled and advertising in this publication. The three attributes that I stated as the first words of this paragraph are ones that every person involved with the production of this magazine possesses, and I am thankful and proud to work with them all!
