Cosmetic Procedures
at Oral Surgery South

For Joseph S. Leibovici, DMD, cosmetic procedures are an extension of his daily work. For over a decade he has been restoring and treating the oral facial region. As an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Leibovici reconstructs the broken jaws or faces of trauma or accident victims. Offering cosmetic procedures is a natural addition to his practice.
“I’ve always had an affinity to cosmetic and reconstructive procedures during my surgical training. They complement the work I do. Having nice teeth, mouth, lips, and great skin all go together,” said Dr. Leibovici, a Board Certified Surgeon since 2000.
His office, Oral Surgery South, is located at 80 Washington Street, Building N-51 in Norwell. In Quincy, the branch office address is 24 Quincy Avenue. One of four co-founding physicians, Dr. Leibovici practices oral surgery and, since 2006, is the partner who performs non-invasive cosmetic procedures with a particular specialty in Botox® Cosmetics, Juvederm™ and dermal fillers.
This aspect of his practice is growing and Dr. Leibovici draws satisfaction from the remarkable improvement to a patient’s appearance. “I get a lot of enjoyment making someone look five to ten years younger. Why not? It’s non-invasive,” said the 43-year-old doctor.
Non-invasive methods are appealing to having a facelift because such options are more affordable, more comfortable, and generally, a patient can go back to work the same day.
In today’s working society, many seek to rejuvenate their appearance, with a goal to look refreshed, not redone. “The Baby Boomers feel like they’re still 30 or 40 years old, and they want to feel better about themselves. They want to look as young as they feel.”
Finding solutions best suited to an individual is part of an initial free consultation with Dr. Leibovici, who personally administers all treatments, which vary according to individual needs. Oral Surgery South offers a variety of cosmetic services and Dr. Leibovici likes to spend time with patients educating them about the options.
Botox® Cosmetic Treatment reverses the effects of crow’s feet, worry lines and laugh lines by cosmetic denervation. Botox® is injected into the tiny muscles that create wrinkles and the procedure is virtually painless. It is used only to treat expression lines, not sagging skin caused by aging. The results can last an average of four months, although research shows that long-term use of the injections leads to a longer duration of each treatment’s effect.
Juvederm™ is an injectable gel to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and is a form of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural complex sugar found in all mammals. HA acts like a sponge, attracting and absorbing more than 1,000 times its weight in water and nutrients. This injectable will smooth laugh lines, smoker’s lines, marionette lines and borders of the lips. The regions of the midface and the lips are common rejuvenation areas. The results are immediate — a fresher, more youthful appearance — and the effects may last up to six months or longer. Some of the new Juvederm injections already contain a local anesthetic for a more comfortable procedure.
Chemical peels are highly effective in restoring a smooth surface and luster to skin. Dr. Leibovici uses a line of medical grade peels manufactured by Vitality Institute Medical Institute, such as VI Peel, which nourishes and rejuvenates the skin with collagen. There are four different peels, each customized to particular complexions – regular, fine lines, acne or skin discoloration. After the half-hour procedure, one may return to work. The gentle sloughing process takes about three days with radiant, healthy skin results in a week. The VI Derm Skincare System is not available in department store or drugstores. Dr. Leibovici advocates for the dramatic yet gentle process of VI peels over more invasive laser resurfacing or the older and harsher chemical peels.
Oral Surgery South features state-of-the-art equipment and experienced staff. Office Manager Candy Carey has been on the job for 19 years, overseeing 25 employees for two branch offices. “The average length of employment among our employees is 15 years,” she said.
Few people realize that Oral Maxillofacial surgery board certification requires proficiency in cosmetic surgery involving the various structures of the face. Dr Leibovici has academic appointments at Boston University and Tufts University in the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is Assistant Clinical Professor at Boston University, Boston Medical Center and a Clinical Instructor at Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He enjoys teaching the surgical residents as well as the graduate students all aspects of OMS, but focuses on Facial Trauma and Facial Cosmetic procedures. Dr Leibovici also participates and lectures to the local community and local professional study groups.
Dr. Leibovici feels his experience as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is an advantage in the area of cosmetic procedures. “I spend a lot of time on the face. I’m more aware of its muscular and skeletal structure. As to cosmetic procedures, if people are educated and procedures are done correctly, they’ll come back. I get a lot of positive feedback, and people love the results.”
